Monk caught dining with woman

Police are seeking the identity of a monk who was photographed having dinner with a woman in public, behaviour deemed inappropriate by Buddhists, reports said on Friday.

The picture has been uploaded and shared through various websites.

The monk's action was not appropriate but was not considered a punishable offence, said Phra Ratcharatnaporn, head of the Phravinayadhikarn - a group of monks appointed to oversee monastic discipline.

It is something for the Buddhist hierarchy to look into, not the police.

He was not caught, he was seen.

"Mr Nopparat said his office would work with the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to suppress the further spread of the picture online because the content has a negative effect on the image of Buddhism."

Naturally, the last thing any good Buddhist of the Thai persuasion would want, value or encourage is truth telling, honesty or awareness - all anathema.

Instead of the police worrying about things like murder, child rape, theft, and the like, they are not worrying about the eating habits of monks?

Who cares what, when, where or with whom monks eat? It's matter for them and their followers, wholly separate from and irrelevant to the state and its law enforcement apparatus, unless of course there are grounds for suspecting that the monk committed an actual crime like one of the above. Did he? Is he so suspect?

Enjoying a meal in company is not a crime under Thai law.
