Copyright group dooms Thai listing

The top lobbying group driving US government policy on copyrights and trademarks has asked Washington to upgrade the rating of Thailand because the government has increased cooperation and changed political direction on the issue.

The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA), an alliance of industry groups pushing for tougher laws on piracy and counterfeits, said it believes the Yingluck Shinawatra government may be about to reverse years of abuse of intellectual property (IP) laws.

The group voted to "recommend that Thailand be moved to the Watch List" in the 2013 report of international IP violators by the US Trade Representative (USTR) in April.

.....(NOTE: A previous version of this story was unclear..... This new article is a train wreck, too. Reading the first part of the article , we're all cheering Thailand's imminent upgrade to 'not quite as bad as North Korea', but the IIPA report, while assuming Thailand has a functioning police force, expects -among many other things - aforementioned imaginary entity to go ahead and shut down 40 malls and put around 1,000,000 people [fake/'illegal' industry] out of work and expects Thais to suddenly start paying about 10 times as much for anything digital. Next they'll be wanting the police to wear helmets when they ride their motorbikes.

Thai again pretend that nothing is wrong with their system. With this, Thai could never see and correct what outside people look obviously as irregularities.

More small business people and cottage industries will soon shut their doors. Another small chapter in the story of corporatist domination.

Don't worry, jobless Thai people, very soon the banking industry will be offering you no-doc mortgages so you can buy overpriced houses that you will default on in less than 5 years. This plan worked so well in Greece afterall...

    We've seen this all before...

Come on people if you want a Burberry original then you have to pay the price. That is how the world goes round. For people to make money on the backs of say Burberry its immoral and they need to be treat as criminals.Has there been any new drugs produced in Thailand answer a big NO.Do you think it is cheep to produce a new life saving drug.Without the investment no more new drugs so that is OK is it?

The average Thai (and most farang) doen't see anything wrong with such piracy. They can't even fathom who is being hurt by piracy. Admittedly, corporations should lower prices for their creations, but without residual payments, there would be less incentive to create.
