Woman killed in tourist van-train crash

KANCHANABURI - A woman was killed and 10 other people injured when a train hit a tourist van on a railway crossing in Sai Yok district on Monday afternoon.

The van, driven by Tossapon Kongprasoot, 28, crossed the track at a spot where there is no barrier or warning lights, in front of Yoko River Kwai Resort in tambon Soom Soom, just as a train carrying about 70 local and foreign passengers was approaching.

The van, carrying 10 passengers, failed to cross the track in time and the train hit the middle of the vehicle, police said.

To RonBargie: Do you really think a competency test would make any difference? It would just create a new way of making money for the people giving the training and tests. No one would ever fail.

All railroad crossings have stop signs but no one ever stop.

So everybody now knows that a van is no match for a train. So what next?

  • Discussion 7 : 25 Feb 2013 at 19.337

So sorry for those involved but what about the high speed trains will it be the same?

    This is bad.
Next week we read in this newspaper that the two Farang passengers in the Mini-Van are to blame.

Proved by the Thai police. Because they (the farang) were talking to the driver!

No Thai people are to blame!

To D3: - you are correct. However it is the government's and tourrism industry's hell bent strategy on protecting their reputation and not reporting crime and danger facts so as not to discourage tourists that is to blame. On the roads here, the govt reports 12 - 13000 deaths a year. The real figure is closer to 20000 but the monitoring processes do not allow this to be reported. The crime situation is similar. The second problem is if they honestly reported the facts, the police would have to do something measurable about it - and that is a major problem.

How much longer will the government allow non-qualified driver to carry passengers? This is a disgrace to Thailand.

Tourists get killed in road accidents, they get cheated, they get shot, the get burnt alive in their hotel, they get raped and they get murdered. And after all this, Thailand is OFTEN rated as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Is it due to lack of knowledge of the voters. Is it due to the type of adventures and thrills that tourists are really looking for. Is it due to the fact that other tourist destinations are far worse than this.

Yet another van "accident". It is about time that the drivers of these vehicles had some sort of competencey test before they are let loose on the public.
My condolences to the family of the deceased, and I hope every one else makes a full recovery, including the poor train driver!
