20-year-old krathom dealer nabbed

Police on Monday arrested a man for selling krathom trees and leaves in Songkhla's Hat Yai district.

Krathom (mitragyna speciosa) is indigenous to Thailand but its use is illegal. It is in the same category as cannabis. The plant has been traditionally used for its anti-depressant properties. It has a similar affect to coca leaves.

Pol Col Adirek Buraheng, superintendent of Hat Yai police station, on Tuesday named the suspect as Hanafi Lambensa, a 20-year-old Hat Yai resident.
