EU told use Thailand as base

Thailand has the potential to be a hub for Europe to the fast-growing Greater Mekong sub-region, a forum was told on Monday.

Simon Makinson, vice-chairman of the European Asian Business Centre, told the "Thailand at a Glance" forum that the kingdom's location was attractive for companies to set up regional offices for markets in Myanmar and other countries in the sub-region.

Do you ever get the impression that the Thai government continues to try to sell Thailand, but has no clue as to what they are selling? Just - come to Thailand, figure it out later.

"... to be a hub for Europe to ..." soon after they have figured out, how to fix the ever growing problems at home - maybe.

A diplomatic mission seeking investment in and imports from Belgium, not Belgium investing in Thailand. Apart from some excellent chocolates and wonderful beers (crazy prices here due to the import tariff), bit of a non-starter. Any country looking for 'frontier' investment in Myanmar isn't going to establish a base here in Thailand, it's going to be in Singapore with it's advanced banking and telecommunications links, to say nothing of it's transport capabilities. An example is the French giant TotalFinaElf. They've been in Myanmar for quite a few years now, one of their gas fields is a significant supplier to Thailand.
