Justice Minister Chaikasem Nitisiri is considering selling ageing prison complexes to property developers to raise money to build new jails and ease chronic overcrowding.
More jails are needed to house the steadily growing number of prisoners, he said.
Mr Chaikasem said he was looking for ways to increase the number of prisons in the country. The sale of existing prisons such as the Klong Prem Central Prison, also known as the Lard Yao prison, is an option, he said.
