MANILA - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in the Philippines on Monday to demand that a multimillion-dollar fund set aside for legislators be scrapped amid reports of corruption in the use of the money.
The demonstration marked the first major protest against corruption under the administration of President Benigno Aquino, who had vowed to reform the system of disbursements to stop the abuses.
Nearly 60,000 people marched to Luneta Park in Manila despite intermittent rain, while thousands more gathered in different venues in other parts of the Philippines to demand the abolition of the fund popularly called Pork Barrel.
