Twekiat Menakanist, a law expert at Thammasat University, has been selected as the new Constitution Court justice, replacing Wasan Soypisudh whose resignation took effect on Aug 1.
Senate selection committee members met on Thursday to pick the new judge, who was required to receive a two-thirds majority vote, or 4 votes, of the five-member panel. The committee chose the 60-year-old legal expert after they spent 3 hours and a half and eight rounds of proposing numerous candidates, including law academics and senior justices.
The Senate must approve Mr Twekiat within 30 days of the committee’s selection of the new judge. Once Mr Twekiat is appointed, the nine charter court justices will meet and pick the new president from among them.
