Parliament on Tuesday approved section 8 and section 9 of the charter amendment bill, which relates to the make-up of the Senate.
The joint session between MPs and senators passed section 8 by 362 votes to 115
Section 8 stipulates that an election must be held to fill an empty seat in the Senate within 45 days of the seat becoming vacant as a result of resignation or death. The election need not take place within 45 days if a majority in the Senate committee agrees to pick another senator in office to replace his predecessor whose remaining term is less than 180 days.
