Thongthong Chandrangsu, permanent secretary for the Prime Minister's Office, said on Monday that he plans to enter the monkhood again.
Mr Thongthong, who was first ordained in 1995, told reporters he wanted to study and practice dhamma and that his forthcoming stint as a monk would be dedicated to His Majesty the King.
He said he will be ordained on Nov 4 and will leave for a pilgrimage to India with the abbot and monks of Wat Debsirin the next day. He will enter the monkhood for 15 days and take official leave of absence for 10 days.
"I've already informed Deputy Prime Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan, who is my superior, about this and I affirm that this is about my faith in Buddhism and it's not because of political pressure," Mr Thongthong said.
