US averts crisis, passes debt bill

Washington - The US Senate voted to raise the debt limit ahead of a Thursday deadline and reopen the federal government, sending the legislation to the opposition-controlled House of Representatives for approval.
The Democratic-controlled Senate's bi-partisan compromise won swift approval by 81 votes to 18.
The government shutdown and "debt crisis" has dominated news in the US for the past two weeks.
