A man in possession of 133kg of heroin worth about 6.66 billion baht was apprehended by Myanmar narcotics authorities on Tuesday in Tachilek town, across the Mae Sai River from Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.
The incident marks the largest haul of illicit drugs ever seized along the Thai-Myanmar border in Chiang Rai.
According to Thai Rath online, the authorities spotted a Myanmar man acting suspiciously while they were patrolling the shores of the Mae Sai River.
The man, identified only as Mr Mong-ta, was driving a motorbike back and forth between the river and an unspecified location. Each trip, he dropped off a bag at an area on the river’s bank, before heading off to pick up another.
The police went in to arrest the man after he had placed down four bags, each of which had 100 slabs of heroin inside.
He allegedly refused to tell police who the intended recipients of the illicit drugs were.
