The Public Health Ministry is warning provincial health units to take action to prevent a pneumonia epidemic breaking out.
According to the ministry, at least 63,037 people contracted pneumonia between May and last month, 283 of whom died. About 70% of pneumonia patients were elderly or children.
This year's pneumonia outbreak is not as bad as last year, but the ministry warned that long rainy periods may spread the respiratory infection.
The ministry said flood areas must be monitored closely by health units, adding that mobile clinics and local health volunteers have been arranged for the worst hit localities.
The ministry also issued another report yesterday saying that 73 people had died in floods in the Central, East and Northeastern regions since Sept 17 -- 71 of them drowned and two were electrocuted.
