A taxi driver who had been arrested 11 times before on theft charges was arrested again on Friday for breaking into unoccupied homes and offices in Bangkok during the night.
Pol Maj Gen Jitti Rodbangyang, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said Sompotch Sarasomboon was apprehended at an apartment in Khlong Sam Wa district. Officers confiscated his car, two shoes and several tools as evidence.
The 38-year-old driver confessed that he routinely drove around the city in his pink taxi between 9 and 10pm in search of homes or workplaces with nobody inside. After picking his target, he then would put on a face mask and uses the equipment he carried to break in.
He told officers he normally got away with electronic devices, mobile phones, cameras, Buddhist amulets, and cash. He then sold off the stolen properties at the Khlong Lod Night Market and used the money for gambling.
The driver said he had broken into five buildings in areas under the authority of the Wang Thonglang police station before he was caught.
Prior to the arrest, police had received complaints from several companies on Rama IX road that various items had been stolen from their offices, said Pol Maj Gen Jitti.
The deputy chief said Mr Sompotch had been apprehended a total of 11 times on theft charges by seven police stations in Bangkok.
The suspect was taken into custody at Wang Thonglang station for further proceedings.
