A woman impersonating a nurse has stolen a two-day old infant from her mother at a hospital in Songkhla’s Sadao district, report said on Thursday.
The 17-year-old mother, whose name was withheld, said a woman in her 30s wearing a uniform similar to those worn by nurses approached her while she was at Sadao Hospital and took her daughter away on Wednesday afternoon. The woman told her the child needed an immediate checkup.
The stranger then disappeared, along with her baby.
She became worried and asked hospital staff what happened to her child, She found out that the woman who took her baby from her was not a nurse at the hospital.
Sadao Hospital director Pimol Wiwatsamuang said a woman matching the description of the kidnapper came into the hospital the previous day and asked staff whether there were children whose parents were not ready to take care of them.
Police said footage from a CCTV camera at a nearby intersection showed a motorcycle taxi dropping off a woman wearing a white blouse and black pants and holding a baby in front of a school. Police suspected the woman is a member of a gang that abducts young babies and sells them in Malaysia.
The police have alerted officers at checkpoints along the Malaysian border in tambon Sadao and tambon Padang Besa to be on the lookout for people travelling with very young baby.
