The Transport Ministry is asking bus operators and bus parts manufacturers to avoid using flammable materials in buses for the sake of public safety.
Somchai Siriwatanachoke, permanent secretary of the ministry, said the request is related to the materials used in ceilings and dashboards, curtains, ceiling fabric, seat foam, seat fabric, the leather covers on dashboards and seats, and interior wood lining.
"The measure is designed to prevent or help reduce the risk of fire inside buses and improve passenger safety," Mr Somchai said.
He added the Department of Land Transport has studied the safety of double-decker buses and found them adequate for public services.
However, operators had been asked to make sure their drivers obey the rules of the road and slow down when negotiating curves.
The ministry also is investigating the causes of serious bus accidents to see if it can set more safety measures for the road, Mr Somchai said.
