'5 Power 5' seeks to burnish BKK's image

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) wants people to see Suvarnabhumi Airport not just as a place to board and exit airplanes, but also as home to some of Thailand's best attractions.

King Power vicepresident Sombat Dechapanichkul and AoT acting president Nirandra Theeranartsin (fourth and fifth from left) celebrate the launch of 5 Power 5@ Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The state-controlled airport operator is using the occasion of the airport's fifth anniversary this month to change perceptions away from notorious congestion and earlier deficiencies to highlight five categories of enticements on offer.

“Airport of Smiles” !! What a hoot! The mere mention that AOT is ‘encouraging’ the staff to be “more friendly to passengers and leave a better impression” is the closest I’ve heard to admitting the airport is in short supply with smiles and, in fact, unfriendly.
After spending 15 million baht the ‘5 Power 5’ campaign results to pitch the airport are: 1) You can transit to other locations (?) 2) They sell the same food found throughout the entire country (?) 3) You can spend your money at inflated prices on products found throughout the entire country 4) They have big sculptures. And 5) there’s a drawing and you might win.
Too many people have been set-up, scammed, ripped-off, cheated and poorly treated in the past and see no improvement in these passenger-important issues by AOT, to subject themselves to the ‘Suwanabhume experience’ again. A drawing and a chance to win can’t undo the greater likelihood of the ‘Suwanabhume experience’ and the chance to lose.

Who gives a crap about some stupid campaign, just make the airport clean, convenient and scam free. People have been complaining about the airport for years and this is the best they can come up with? Throwing a 15 million baht marketing campaign? Really AoT? That's how you earn your salary? You should be ASHAMED of yourselves.

Perhaps getting rid of special privileges to certain AoT so they have to go through regular immigration channels is a good start so they realize what a terrible job they are doing.

What a bunch of useless people at he AoT...all one has to do is just read message boards about the AoT. Incompetent.

As long as passengers have to queue for up to an hour to enter the country or two hours to leave, the AoT is wasting its time. Solve the REAL problems first. All too often, using the airport is a thoroughly miserable experience far below the level you can enjoy at other airports in the region.

I am a gambling man and will bet that Hua-Hin is a more popular destination than either Chiang Rai or Hat Yai
