One of the reasons why immigration is so slow because there are too many people who over stay their visa, so each persons length of stay needs to be checked carefully. Also the thai immigration data is linked with a system in the US that cross checks for criminals each time a person enters or leaves thailand, cross checking takes a couple of minutes.

I do think they need to do away with the paper forms, even thai citizens need to fill out a form when leaving their country, thats nonsense and useless. For guest entering its understandable as they need to track where they are going and staying, a standard for every country.

The real bottleneck isn't at security, it is at passport control. Even if people are processed more quickly through security first, they will still hit the wall at immigration checks. Last time I was there, queueing for 45 minutes, I was pondering what an utter waste of time and resources it was - all these immigration people 'pushing papers', thousands of people standing in line for up to an hour - for what? Last time I exited London there was no passport check at all, for anyone (not just UK or EU passengers).
