Don Mueang gets clearance

Nok Air the initial beneficiary

Flood-ravaged Don Mueang airport is due to reopen for commercial flights next Tuesday with a bit of fanfare officiated the day before by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Home sweet home: Nok Air’s passenger check-in counters remain unchanged at Don Mueang’s Terminal 1.

Bangkok's old airport, which closed last Oct 25 during the deluge that paralysed central provinces and Bangkok for two months, will serve only one scheduled airline, the budget carrier Nok Air.

Military hands-off civilian business please. Close Don Muang now. It's a waste of public money.

Don Muang Airport must be more fully utilized to ease the burden of the Suvarnnabhumi Airport. A single airline operating from any airport will only ensure a slow death of the facility. What needs to be done is to let most if not all domestic airlines move to Don Muang, and a fast means of transport link between the two airports must also be on the agenda.

If the airlines aren't returning because they don't trust the government's ability to keep the airport floodwater-free, I am not surprized. The government's flood management plan has already been torn apart and ridiculed "politely" on Channel 3. It even has water seemingly going uphill through Khao Yai on its way southwards. Perhaps the government water management experts are going to make water defy gravity this year as part of the solution to prevent flooding.
