Thailand left out as Asean signs trade deals

Singapore - Six southeast Asian nations signed trade agreements on Tuesday paving the way for a single market in the region, pressing on with the pacts despite the postponement of a key summit.

The economic ministers of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore and Malaysia signed three separate deals covering trade in goods, investment and services.

Besides the six nations attending Tuesday's signing ceremony, Thailand and three other Asean members - Vietnam, the Philippines and Burma - were due to sign at a later date, officials said.

The six decided to press on with the signing rather than wait for a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) that was delayed by recent unrest in Thailand.

"As these agreements are integral to Asean's economic integration, the Asean economic ministers agreed to meet in Singapore to sign and have them enter into force as soon as possible," said Malaysian Trade Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

The three agreements were originally to be signed at the 10-member Asean's annual summit in Thailand this month, officials said.

Anti-government protests in Thailand, which currently chairs Asean, forced that country's former government to move the summit from Bangkok to the northern city of Chiang Mai, and then to postpone it until March.

After Thailand's opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva was elected Monday as the country's new prime minister, the foreign ministry said the summit will be held from Feb 24-26.

"The economic ministers felt that we should proceed" to sign the trade deals without delay before February, Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry, Lim Hng Kiang, told reporters on Tuesday.

"We felt we should have a meeting, sign and press on because if you postpone everything till end February we lose two months."

The documents signed Tuesday have taken on added importance during a global economic crisis, Lim said.

Asean has made itself more attractive to foreign investment but, with the world in a credit crunch, the level of foreign investment will fall over the next two years, he said.

"And if Asean cannot portray itself as a more attractive venue I think then we lose out."

Indonesia's Trade Minister Mari Pangestu also stressed the need for Asean to forge closer economic ties in light of the global financial crisis.

"I think from the Asean perspective, it was important for us to ensure that we don't experience any delays in the progress that we have achieved in terms of the Asean economic community," she told AFP after the signing ceremony.

Asked if the crisis would affect Asean's integration goals, she said: "One would hope not because I think we have all the interest to make sure that this continues to work."

She added: "If the global situation becomes more uncertain, then making regional cooperation and integration work will make you stronger."

The agreements signed Tuesday liberalise trade in services and grant benefits to investors.

The third covers trade in goods. Tariffs on most goods had already been cut to between zero and five percent as part of Asean's plan to establish a single market and manufacturing base by 2015. (AFP)

Three years after the coward coup, what have we got? Has Thailand become a better country after Thaksin is gone and convicted? The PAD and its supporters may say it is the price we pay for new politics. Shame on you. The mess you and your supporters drags the country down. As a well educated Thai, I've completely lost trust, respect, and confidence in the country. I also worry about my children how they will compete with the Singaporeans, the Malaysians, etc.

ASEAN and being part of the global economy is so important. I read in the Los Angeles times about the slump in the Thai tourism demand. I am really shock by the stupid statement the Foreign minister made with international press.
Thailand needs to be more integrate with other ASEAN members. This whole issue with the summit delay is a major loss and negative for Thailand far beyond the level of Phuket Tsunami.
I do not see any legal action (implentation) for the nut head that took over the Airport and destoy the reputation of Thai Tourism in the eyes of Americans. If you cannot deal with Mobster then Thailand is very similar to many African countries and should not be host the ASEAN summit. How can Thai who claim that they are democratic allow a in compentent leader to come to office with voice of the the people. That is very strange to me. I would not be spending any of my money for Tourism in Thailand and will be telling many more americans not to do the same. Thailand can only correct the damage by not simply reducing price. It has to show the world that their is law and order and no non elected group and take over govt office and rob many valuable assets. In additon, nobody should be alow to close an transcontineal airport that effected several hundred thousand passanger. What to do thin they are going to be saying about their horrible experience in Thailand.

Thailand left out as Asean signs trade deals...........................................

Asean members should pressure Thailand to give up and allow another member to hold the SUMMIT....don't waste time...further delay cause other members to be unable to proceed on other matters. See for yourself now. Thailand is now in no position at all to decide when will be the summit and confirm the actual date and place for the summit.

THAILAND must give up.....too weak to seek help.......................................

I very concern on this matter. Current, Thailand is run by old people (behind the government) who could not accept that the world is changed (PM is just a puppet!). The attitude toward other countries is very negative and not constructive indeed.

It is pretty dead end situation for me. I think it is time for the www.generation to stand up and make a play!

It won't be long before Thailand isolates itself from the rest of the world not just other Asian countries. They'll have to turn to countries like Zimbabwe for friends. How much longer must we put up with this arrogance from Thai leaders who still maintain they can survive without cooperating with anyone. I have great sympathy for the new prime minister. He has taken over thailand in an impossible situation. When everything collapses he will be blamed. Thailand always has to have a scapegoat. What a sad state of affairs for a country that could prosper if it only gave itself a chance

I think that devilment can be explained simple mindedly:

Thai Govt. is waiting in the wings for their own grand entrance. Asean summit should be THEIR event, THEY wanted to be the great heroes and celebrating that big show as a homerun showing the influence and power of THE GREAT THAI NATION...

And now have some party-pooper destroyed that wet dream unexpactetly. What to do without loosing the face? Perhaps their is a small chance to retrieve the situation end of february - AT HOME!

    God bless you!

Buck up everybody. Dont just wait for the suitable time even for another day. Why not just sign the trade liberalisation and integration Pact and SEAL the whole thing by FAX ? I dont see the need to wait now that Thailand has a legitimate GO VERN MENT , do you? Do we still want to prove 'He who laughs last laughs the loudest' as still an applicable 'idiom' here?
