Supachai Panitchpakdi, secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, has called for Asia to have a monetary fund of its own to ensure financial stability in the region.
Mr Supachai said such a fund is essential for bilateral and multi-lateral economic cooperation. It would help cushion effects of the world economic recess on Asian countries, he said.
Mr Supachai was former secretary-general of the World Trade Organisation before he was appointed UNCTAD secretary-general.
