24-hour border checkpoints proposed

Businesses are proposing that the government open around-the-clock border checkpoints at Sadao in Songkhla, Nong Khai and Ban Khlong Luek in Sa Kaeo to ease traffic congestion.

Niyom Wairatpanij, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's committee on border trade development, urged acceleration of 24-hour operations at the three checkpoints, especially in the South at Sadao, which suffers the most from congestion.

He also urged the government to accelerate construction of the US$300-million Hat Yai-Sadao motorway to ease persistent traffic problems between those two points.

Khun Joe, I support your statement. People live in Lyon (France) can go to work in Geneva (Switzerland) daily, and people live in Geneva can go to do shopping in Lyon every weekend, freely. They use commune money, Euro, and share the same idea of Globalization. But here, the border has another meaning. Khmer poor workers, who cross border to find a job in Thailand, have always been arrested or shot dead. Thousand Cambodian and Lao people still detained in Thai prisons, accused of trespassing border without documents. ASEAN still has a long way to walk together.

This region could be one large open market not unlike European Union, too bad Thai nationalists are gonna spoil all of that. I guess years of misinformation by thai government about the Siamese-Franco treaties and about the Preah Vihear ruling give rise to extremist nationalist groups. You cannot put the genie back in the bottle.

"A shortage of officials" ... rather surprising considering the lucrative nature of such postings. Needs a big recruitment drive before a 24 hour operation could have any effect.

24 borders mean gamblers at border casion no longer need their watch. They can pawn their rolex for more chips.
