Japan demand should offset EU vegetable ban

Thailand's exports of food to Japan are projected to grow faster this year than in 2010 and could offset an expected drop to the European Union, says the Export Promotion Department.

Malee Choklumlerd, the department's deputy director-general, forecast food exports to Japan would rise by 15% this year from 12% last year, as the impact of the March disasters and subsequent needs in the recovery period build demand.

In the first four months of this year, Thailand's food exports to Japan increased by 23.8% year-on-year to US$1.03 billion.
