The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) may purchase more electricity from the Nam Ngum and Nam Theun 2 hydropower plants in Laos to cut its production costs amid recent gas supply disruptions in the Gulf of Thailand.
Governor Sutat Patmasiriwat said the state utility's electricity generation costs would increase by 2 billion baht until the end of next month, when PTT will finish repairs to its underwater gas pipeline that ruptured on June 25.
The shortage forced Egat to use bunker oil instead for electricity generation at a 48% higher cost than natural gas.
