Cut off from its supply of natural rattan, Hawaii Thai Co made a virtue of necessity with its stylish and durable synthetic furniture

A shortage of raw materials driven by forest closure policy in the late 1980s has brought significant changes to Thailand's furniture industry over the past two decades.

Workers weave chairs with synthetic rattan. The material, developed from polyethylene and polypropylene, together with substances that resist breakage and heat, was a great invention for Hawaii Thai.

Competition from China, Taiwan and Vietnam emerged as another negative condition. The industry was stumbling and enlisted as a sunset industry with the Thai Chamber of Commerce this year.
