The government expects to allocate two billion baht to help people in the heavily industrialised Map Ta Phut area, according to Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu.
The budget would fund a plan to design Map Ta Phut as a pollution-control area, expected to require around 1 billion baht. As well, the Public Health Ministry will expand hospital services to 200 beds from the existing 80, with a mobile medical service also planned.
The Provincial Waterworks Authority will also expand pipelines to cover all communities in the area, while the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry will build 10 weather stations to measure pollution in the area.
Mr Korbsak said the government also expected to spend 200 million baht to build a waste treatment facility to handle about 300,000 tonnes per year.
A new committee chaired by former prime minister Anand Panyarachun was formed this week to seek short- and long-term solutions for Map Ta Phut, where a court has suspended 76 industrial projects pending environmental reviews.
