The government should support Thailand's herbal industry in order to lower the country's medicine imports, now worth 60-70 billion baht annually, says Chernporn Tengamnuay, honourary chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries' pharmaceutical industry club.
"If we are able to develop our herbal industry, we can lower imports of chemicals for the medicine and makeup industries as well as create jobs for Thais by planting herbs," said Mr Chernporn, who is also an FTI vice-chairman.
The domestic medicine market is valued at 100 billion baht, of which 60-70 billion baht is in imports. But in terms of volume, 70-80% of the medicine sold is produced in Thailand.
