We are again drawing from the richness of supply chain blogs, this time of a prolific fellow named Pete Abilla who operates from shmula.com. He is a major proponent of the Lean/Six Sigma movement and is particularly adept at presenting down-to-earth, practical everyday examples of these approaches.
He recently branched out somewhat, referring to an article in The New York Times in which it was explained why manufacturing the iPhone in the United States will likely never happen, citing the following:
- Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option. One former executive described how the company relied upon a Chinese factory to revamp iPhone manufacturing just weeks before the device was due on shelves. Apple had redesigned the iPhone's screen at the last minute, forcing an assembly line overhaul. New screens began arriving at the plant near midnight.
