Smuggling of cassava in the spotlight

Thailand will suspend cassava imports along the border until May and control cassava transport in Chanthaburi and Sa Kaeo provinces to prevent the circumvention of the mortgage scheme using imported crops, says Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom.

The minister signed an order prohibiting the transport of fresh cassava as instructed by the National Tapioca Policy Committee.

The ministry also coordinated with the military and the Customs Department to strictly monitor the smuggling of fresh cassava into the country to take advantage of the government's mortgage scheme.
