Kittiratt urges companies to cooperate in wage hike

Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong is strongly urging the private sector to accept the 40% rise in the daily minimum wage scheduled for April.

"The wage increase is not just some populist policy aimed at trying to please labourers. Higher wages will boost domestic consumption," he told a seminar yesterday on the future of Thailand's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Mr Kittiratt said Thailand's economy has been export-dependent for the past 15 years while domestic consumption remained low.

I have a young child and I don't want him growing up as a "quality consumer". I just want him to grow up as a "responsible member of the society".

I think there is a lot of noise about daily minimum wages etc. in Thailand recently. But in the end, the consumers will pay for the wages. I believe the business owners are making a big fuss of it just to get a better deal from the politicians (who often get more than they deserve in this country - in contrast with the small business owners who have to work really hard).
