Huawei of China is poised to win the contract for the government's One Tablet per Child scheme to supply 860,000 tablet computers to primary school students for US$60 a unit.
The first batch of 2,000 Chinese tablets is scheduled for delivery on March 15, said a source at the Office of Basic Education Commission.
Another industry source said the tablet project may come under a barter trade agreement between the Thai and Chinese governments. ''China might offer free tablets with higher specifications worth up to 6,000 baht apiece if the Thai government agrees to a barter swap of rice,'' said the source.
