Boonruean Taokham and 500 of his neighbours own shares in a power plant. But the shares did not stem from a stock purchase; they are the product of a novel 22-kilowatt mini-hydropower plant, the first community-owned plant in Thailand.
‘‘If any of the villagers want to hold shares in the power plant, we sell them at 10 baht each. We set up a fund to manage the shares where villagers can pay monthly instalments,’’ says Mr Boonruean in front of the first community-owned plant in Thailand.
Located in Mae Ta district in the northern province of Lampang, the plant started operation on Feb 3.
