Petrochemical industries in Rayong plan to jointly invest 17 billion baht in environmental management programmes, aiming to reduce emissions and their impact on nearby communities.
"The main reason that has brought industry operators together [to invest in] environmental technology is to ensure operators are able to walk along with the community," said Supachai Watananguru, chairman of Petrochemical Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).
"This budget is not only to help protect the environment but also encourage quality of life of communities through the installation of advanced technology that is designed to reduce pollution."
The participants are petrochemical makers in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, which has been the focus of growing concern about environmental quality over the past three years. Mr Supachai acknowledged the industry had received frequent complaints about emissions.
"This budget may be considered a low percentage when compared with the total investment in the petrochemical industry. However, it is at least higher than in the past," he said.
New petrochemical investments worth a total of 300 billion baht have received approval to set up operations in the area from early 2007 through 2011.
