New iPad triggers data boom

Operators compete in offering packages

The mobile-data price war is heating up with major mobile operators beefing up their promotional offerings in light of the launch of the new iPad yesterday.

Fans queue in front of Central Chidlom Department Store in Bangkok to buy the new iPad launched yesterday. The WiFi model will be available in black and white at 16,500 baht for 16GB, 19,500 baht for 32GB and 22,500 baht for 64GB. The WiFi + 4G version will be available at 20,500 baht for 16GB, 23,500 for 32GB and 26,500 for 64GB. PATTARACHAI PEECHAPANICH

Tablet data users have become a potential gold mine for mobile operators because their average airtime usage doubles that of smartphone users, said Pratthana Leelapanang, vice-president for value-added services at Advanced Info Service.

Yes, "the new iPad" is 4G but backwards compatible with 3G (2G). Thailand has limited and very struggling 3G coverage and the legality of 3G licenses appears to still be in question. The iPad 3 is a spaceship visiting the stone age.

The new ipad is configured for LTE 4G in the US, so its use in non 3G countries is limited for such an expensive techtoy. Thailand will likely have its 3G when other asean countries moved to 4G.

When will we have real 3G?
