Thailand will still be top rice exporter

Thailand would be able to maintain its position as the world’s largest rice exporter this year, permanent secretary for commerce Yanyong Puangraj said on Tuesday.

Thailand exported 2.6 million tonnes of rice, worth 53.67 billion baht, from Jan 1 to May 17 and became the world's largest exporter.

The US took second place, exporting two million tones of rice and Vietnam third place with its 1.6 million tonnes of rice exported during the same period, said Mr Yanyong.

Seems to be a large differance between what the farmers are paid and what the exporters are getting

As soon as the world tests, and realizes how adultrated with cheap rice the Hommali rice is it will quit selling on the world market. Corruption is spelling the end of Thailand's quality rice exports thanks to the rice scheme. Scheme, that's a good name for it, although scam would be better.

drsmith (#1) - "India is now the largest rice exporter in the world".

Soon to be "was" - & that was largely as a result of liquidating huge stocks of low-grade rice previously held back by a 4-yr ban on its export. See http://business-standard.com/india/news/india-emerges-as-worlds-top-rice-exporter/473452/

I do agree with your first sentence, though.

In Thailand's mind they are always first or the best at everything, even though the international news says differently. In case Yangyong hasn't read the news for months, India is now the largest rice exporter in the world; not Thailand. Check your warehouses Yangyong and see how many 1,000's of tonnes are rice are sitting there.
