Economist warns of rice quagmire

The government should think carefully about rice policies and be aware of growing competition from Myanmar in terms of rice exports, says prominent academic Chalongphob Sussangkarn.

Dr Chalongphob, former president of the Thailand Development Research Institute and now distinguished fellow of the institute, said the country is on the verge of losing its position as world's top rice exporter.

"Rice policies have to be reviewed and more focus must be put on long-term benefits," he said, noting rice exporters cannot compete under the current government policies.
