Exports won’t reach 15% target

Finance Minister Kitiratt Na-Ranong admitted on Thursday that the 2012 export growth target of 15 per cent set by the Ministry of Commerce would not be achieved.

However, the minister said, he was  not heavy hearted about it because three major factors -- government spending, domestic consumption and private investment -- would enhance economic growth with stability over the remaining months.

Mr Kittiratt expected these three factors would help push economic growth to  between 5.5 per cent and 6.0 per cent this year, as projected by the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).

Kitiratt Na-Ranong is notorious for his populist and propaganda stunts, however he is equally famous by now, for failing all he predicts, does and is in charge of.
Another extremely poor performing official wasting taxpayer's money in the billions.

Yes that I can see may be the case due to poor results last year but the figures will be nothing to get excited about.A 10% increase on nothing is still nothing.

These figures go up and down faster than a fiddlers elbow.I still have not forgotten your leader said 15% some weeks back. Why do people put up with a government that is so out of touch with reality or real life and seemingly ill informed by its so called experts? In suppose the answer is the other lot are no better.

This goes to show how utterly hollow many official statements and claims are. Just weeks after he refused to admit that 15% could not be achieved, he now admits a HUGE revision, down 6 percentage points.
Having said that, don't be surprised if the actual export growth percentage does turn out higher at the end of the year, because last year, exports suffered considerably in Q3 and - in particular - Q4, due to the floods. Provided that we don't see such floods this year, exports in the 2nd half of this year should be much higher than in the same period of last year.
