Insurers urge tariff rejig ahead of AEC

Thailand has highest non-life tariffs in Asia

Local insurers are calling on the government to help map out a new strategic plan, particularly for tariff deregulation, in a move aimed at accommodating the domestic industry to imminent Asean economic integration.

"The time is now ripe for the government sector to get more serious about tariff deregulation to prepare for the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 and world trade liberalisation over the next eight years," said Chai Sophonpanich, chairman of SET-listed Bangkok Insurance at a seminar during the Insurance Week from Sept 28-30 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
