Thais favour changing jobs to advance

Just over half the Thai respondents to a workforce survey believe that the best way to develop their skills and advance their career is by changing employers, the Kelly Global Workforce Index reports.

The survey involved about 170,000 people in 30 countries, including Thailand. It examined issues of job mobility and career progression as part of a shift to a more autonomous and empowered workforce.

The survey reflects a changing attitude from workers, with more seeking to gain new experience and skills with multiple employers, the report said.

As an employer myself, I prefer to recruit staff from fresh graduates, factoring this pattern of behavior. Pay them well by all means and train them enough to perform their job. However, incentives, job training programs and staff welfare have limited impact on them up to a certain period, say 2 years; thereafter, if there are no foreseeable job prospects for advancement within, they will choose to leave for greener pasture. This is particularly acute for line staff since the task done is mundane. Eventually, this would amount to an exchange of staff amongst the employers as their staff moves from one company to another within the same industry.

Thai employees move too quickly and do mot give themselves enough time to really learn or gain solid experiences. Sure, they can negotiate better salary or titles but are they really ready to perform their duties?

It usually takes on person to resign or retire for another to move up.
It usually take too long to happen in a single company.
Employers rarely support employees' training / development as they know that once a worker is more skilled, he will ask for a (deserved) raise or move on the the next door competitor.
Most workers know that they have to change jobs in order to gain experience and hope for a better salary and position.
Same old 'chicken and egg' dilemma.

At my office work, diff. faces appear and disappear. Makes a little bit waste of time from the senior staff in our company to train new employee and just leave after a month or even a week.
