Swine industry opposes asbestos ban, citing costs

A ban on asbestos by the government would cost the swine industry 125 billion baht if implemented, says the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand.

Repercussions would be most felt across the country by livestock raisers, farmers and the poor who would have to shoulder total costs of more than 500 billion baht in total, said the association's president Surachai Sutthitham.

"We ask the government to seriously reconsider this decision, as it will severely affect the livestock industry and general public. There is no solid proof that the mineral causes illness and death," he said.

    @kba, d2.

    Thailand might not have heard about the people dying in the west years ago. In any case no respectable thai will take advise from a foreigner, so they will do their own research, which will be inconclusive.
    Anyway, the red shirt farmers always believe they know what is best for them, they don't need advise from academics and doctors, so if they want asbestos, why not let them have it?

    "If the ban goes ahead, will the government step in to help those who will be affected. We [the swine industry] will not chip in to change our roofs, if the government wants us to do it, they will have to do it for us,"

    The usual red neck (red shirt) comment. Fortunately the only ones who will be hurt are the swine, which will be slaughtered before they get cancer, the farmers and those building the roofs. As they are mostly red shirts anyway, I think the government should choose the cheapest, easiest and most popular solution, and let them keep their roofs - the more the better :-)
