Rice scheme in line with WTO rules

The Ministry of Commerce insisted on Thursday that the government’s rice pledging programme is not against the rules of the World Trade Organisation as alleged.

Thikamporn Nartvoratat, deputy director general of the Foreign Trade Department, said the rice scheme is in line with the rules of the WTO, which allows member countries to provide assistance needed for their farmers.

He was responding to a concern by the US that the rice scheme might have violated the WTO’s regulations to prevent the implementing of trade barriers and called for a discussion on the issue with the Thai government.

"He added that the government’s rice scheme had no effect on other rice exporting countries."

Well, at least not negative effects for now.

D 2 Two different issues. The scheme is aimed at increasing income for farmers. The other issue is the Thai government are trying to form a selling syndicate with it's rice exporting neigbors to try and increase the world markets price. Both have been reported in BP and you can read articles about both.
D 1 The truth will come out somewhere in the near future, can't keep a secret in Thailand.

That is not what they suggested some weeks back, Didn't they say openly that they wished to increase the price of rice on the open market. They also sighted Thailand being the largest rice exporter implying that they could force the increases. However it backfired miserably. Hence another smoke screen.

If the rice scheme is so legal then why all the secrecy, and total lack of transparency, that had been promised by the government. What are they really hiding from the world about this rice scheme?
