Vehicle production passes 2 million mark

Thailand's vehicle production this year exceeded two million units for the first time, boosted by big jumps in domestic sales and exports.

The Thai Automotive Industry Club, which represents manufacturers, had set a target of two million units for the year, but exceeded the target this month, Payungsak Chartsutipol, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, said on Friday.

"The club has now set itself a target of manufacturing three million units a year within five years,'' Mr Payungsak said.

When I first came to Thailand, there were far fewer cars on the road. Yet somehow we managed to get around Bangkok quickly and easily. The air was clean and the sky was blue. Now even provincial cities have traffic jams. Isn't progress wonderful?

Thailand doesnt need more cars .It needs trains and subways. I know politicians probably own a lot stock in PTT and must love watching millions of liters being wasted in traffic everyday but this is wasteful and irresponsible .
