Govt urged to clarify policy on trade talks

The government needs to make it clear whether it is seriously committed to entering into US-led free-trade negotiations under the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP), as wavering policy will affect foreign investment, warn trade experts.

"An executive of one foreign company has said the company will likely move to neighbouring countries such as Vietnam because Thailand has an unclear policy on this trade issue," said Somkiat Trirattanapan, deputy director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department.

The government announced during US President Barack Obama's visit last month that it will initiate the process to participate in TPP negotiations.

Why can patents be sensitive issues? Are we afraid that we couldn't violate other people's intellectual properties? I's true that the legal disputes between Samsung and Apple are a mess but shouldn't we agree in general that the intellectual properties be worth protecting to the same degree as are other private properties?
