Thailand set to reclaim top spot in rice sales

Rice shipments from Thailand are poised to surge 15 per cent this year to help the country win back the top-exporter slot.

Government sales are accelerating from its record stockpiles, an industry group said Wednesday.

Exports may climb to 8 million metric tonnes this calendar year, assuming sales of 1.5 million tonnes from state inventories, from 6.95 million tonnes in 2012, said the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA).

    Purely from a monetary standpoint:
    Thai rice - 600 a ton
    Vietnam rice - 390 "
India rice - 430 " and rice "buyers " say "order from Thailand " ? Yeah right !
Vietnam and India also are just going to sit back and let Thailand recover from their
own blunder or take competitive measures that could drop Thailand to 5th place !

Let's archive this story and revisit it at the end of the year when the exporting figures are known for 2013, then we can ask "Please explain?" Who was the industry group that made the statement? Or should we already know?

Disc #3 oldexp, check your sums, -35% + 15% = -20%. But even so, makes us wonder how Thailand u can claim top spot with these figures?

What a load of old rubbish. Propaganda. In my area where the best rice in Thailand was once grown, Hom Mali rice from Chiang Rai, every week I see another paddy field being filled in for a new building or another warehouse selling building materials. Rice production has fallen dramatically. There is no money in it or the farmers.

'Rice exports to fall again in 2013.'

This headline Jan.30 appears to contradict.

Surprised Thailand even managed to export 6.95 tons of rice last year; the price differentials were very substantial when compared with rice of similar qualities from India and Vietnam. Only countries like Nigeria, China, Philippines and Indonesia, given some consideration, can be persuaded to buy expensive rice on the open market. Considering Thailand’s urgent need to export their excess stock-piles, appreciated baht and fierce competition, will the international buyers continue to purchase Thai rice at such high price? Will Thailand, in desperation, be tempted to sell the rice at a deep discount without being accused of dumping?

Rice price increase + value of baht increase = more foreign sales. That makes sense.

If you believe this, the you must also believe in father Christmas (sorry kids), the tooth fairy and the earth is flat.
