Up in the air, and enjoying it

People have been blaming me lately for writing commentaries that are overly critical. My response to them has been that there is no shortage of upbeat coverage in the media, not all of it deserved. So when things go wrong, someone has to take a stand and point them out instead of turning a blind eye.
If some of my friends are starting to brand me an “angry old man”, so be it. But today I’d like to talk about some frequent-flyer experiences I’ve had, some of them very positive indeed.
I’m always keen to meet people to develop contacts, and on this occasion about a year ago I’d made a lunch date with a Thai cabinet minister for a Saturday. The appointment was made weeks in advance but in the interim a business trip to Singapore came up. My flight back to Bangkok was scheduled for 6am on the Saturday of my lunch.
