The number of companies reporting shutdowns surged in last year's fourth quarter, prompting the government's planning unit to worry about lay-offs in the foreseeable future.
The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) said 7,221 companies were liquidated, up by 26.6% from 5,703 in the same period of 2001 when Thailand was hit by massive floods.
"The figures are quite high compared with the average of 2,500 to 3,000 companies in the same period over the past nine years," said deputy secretary-general Suwanee Khamman.
