Consumer confidence rises again

The consumer confidence index (CCI) for February was up from 81.7 reported in January to stand at 84.0, Thanavath Phonwichai, director of the Economic and Business Forecasting Centre at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said on Thursday.

Mr Thanavath said his centre’s recent surveys showed that consumer confidence had risen for five straight months and was at its highest level in 19 months, since August 2011.

Consumer confidence on the overall economy for the month stood at 74.3, on job opportunity at 75.5 and at 102.2 on future income, he added.

In a world of collapsing consumer demand, Thailand's export economy can't look more precarious. Where there should be outright fear and trepidation, we see rising consumer confidence. Why? Because a dangerous mix of credit growth, unsustainable government stimulus, hot money inflows and artificial wage hikes has created a spike in consumer spending: A classic wealth effect. To say that this effect will be short-lived is an understatement. China is on the verge of collapse. Europe's implosion is picking up speed. The Yen is disintegrating. The British Pound is a basket case. And the rising baht looks set to decimate exports.
