Banks post mixed results in Q3 net profits

The third-quarter net profit of Krungthai Bank (KTB) rose by 3.24% year-on-year as higher net interest revenue slightly outweighed lower non-interest revenue.

The country's second-largest lender by assets posted a quarterly net profit of 9.25 billion baht, it said in a filing with the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET).

Its net interest revenue for the quarter rose by 6.85% year-on-year while non-interest revenue fell by 4.51%.

For the first nine months of this year, KTB's net profit edged up 4.49% over the same period last year to 25.2 billion baht thanks to healthy lending growth of 5.25%.

But non-performing loans (NPLs) as of Sept 30 had jumped 11 billion baht or 19.5% from the end of last year to 67.5 billion.

The banks' NPL ratio rose to 3.08% of outstanding loans at the end of last month from 2.65% at the end of 2013.

Meanwhile, CIMBT posted weak earnings for the third quarter, plunging 34.1% year-on-year to 275 million baht due to increases in loan-loss provision and operating expenses.

Its nine-month net profit also dropped by 6.31% year-on-year to 900 million baht.

The bank set aside 5.6 billion baht in loan-loss provision for the January-September period, a 67.4% year-on-year increase, while operating expenses grew by 16.8%.

CIMBT chief financial officer Narongchai Wongthanavimok said lending growth was likely to miss this year's target of 15% but would still be in double digits.

The bank hopes to keep NPLs at no more than 3% at year-end and plans to put aside an additional provision this quarter.

As of Sept 30, CIMBT's lending expanded 6.9% from the end of last year. Still, its NPL ratio rose to 3.3% or 6 billion baht from 2.5% last December.

Thanachart Capital Plc (TCAP), the holding parent of Thanachart Bank, saw its third-quarter profit tumble 27.6% year-on-year to 1.2 billion baht due largely to the one-time gain from Thanachart Life Insurance's sell-out to Prudential Life Assurance realised in last year's third quarter.

For the nine months, net profit was more than halved to 3.76 billion baht from 7.69 billion in the same period last year.

KTB shares closed yesterday on the SET at 23.10 baht, unchanged, in trade worth 513 million baht.

CIMBT closed at 2.10 baht, unchanged, in trade worth 1.54 million baht, while TCAP closed at 34.50 baht, down one baht, in trade worth 187 million baht.
