Strict tax checks ordered as revenue shortfall looms

The Finance Ministry has ordered the Revenue Department to be more efficient in gathering taxes because it is likely that revenue collection will fall short of the budget estimate by 200 billion baht this financial year, a ministry source said.

The department was instructed to closely examine transactions between parent companies and subsidiaries to ensure there is no tax evasion, the source said. The Revenue Department has in the past mainly checked the tax payments of the parent companies.

The Finance Ministry also ordered the department to ensure that government officials submit their annual income tax returns. Many government officials failed to submit the forms to avoid paying extra tax because the withholding tax was less than their properly assessed tax, the source said.

The Revenue Department was also instructed to check the income tax payments of employees in the private sector, the source said.

The budget target for tax collection for the 2015 fiscal year was set at 1.96 trillion baht.
