Sparkling returns

A diamond is forever, and not just for show. Local jewellery entrepreneur says precious stones offer unique advantages as investments.

Diamonds are the best investment you can make for the future of your children. At least, this is what Thanop "Mark" Eiamamornpan of the upscale Frank's Jewelry & Watch Boutique, believes.

Next year, Mr Thanop will make a comeback in the diamond investment industry with Mark & Fon by Franks, a diamond jewellery brand catering to customers interested in buying diamonds as a long-term investment.

"What gives diamonds comparative advantage over gold and banknotes is portability," Mr Thanop said.

There is no shortage of diamonds in the world. The supply is controlled by one company - DeBeers and with that the price. Good luck on recovering the value of your diamond within a lifetime. The mark up at the retail level is staggering - 100% or greater. If you bought a diamond in the last 5 years - go back to a store and find out what they would actually pay you for it. You would be shocked. Perhaps after you die and your grandchildren go to sell it - they may make a profit. Diamonds should be regarded as a purely emotional purchase - that is how DeBeers created the market that continues to his day. Diamonds as an investment, you have got to be kidding.
